Did you know the bearded man dressed in red, white, and blue we call “Uncle Sam” originated in Troy? Samuel Wilson owned a meat packing company in Troy in the early 1800 and was an inspector for the US Army. He would stamp “US” on the meat barrels he packed and approved to send to the soldiers during the war. The US stood for United States; however, the dock workers personified the US stamp to mean “Uncle Sam”. The Uncle Sam character we know today can be fully explored in September when Troy celebrates Uncle Sam’s birthday with a parade and festival.
