A Focus On The Environment In Delmar

One of our favorite places to visit in Delmar is the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, a place that puts a bright spotlight on our area’s natural beauty, with 450 acres of space to walk, hike, watch local wildlife and admire foliage.

A love for the environment tends to carry through to many of the choices we make, including our home heating choices. And at Northeastern Fireplace & Design, we’ve put considerable time and energy into sourcing some of the industry’s most efficient, environmentally-friendly appliances, including fireplaces and stoves.

In With The New

As hearth professionals, we have a strong appreciation for historic fireplaces and chimneys — it’s humbling to think that the work of technicians who did what we do is still standing decades, sometimes centuries later. But there are some drawbacks to consider when it comes to older chimneys, fireplaces and stoves: they weren’t designed or built to be terribly efficient. Older fireplaces and stoves tend to waste considerable fuel, lose considerable heat up the flue and add particle pollution to the air.

Newer, energy-efficient fireplaces, stoves and inserts, on the other hand, have been developed to deliver much better performance. EPA-tested wood stoves we carry, for example, have been shown to be 50 percent more energy efficient than old stoves, and produce the same amount of heat using a third less fuel. These units also emit 70 percent less particle pollution, which — when you’re concerned with the effect your day-to-day life is having on the environment — is a great benefit.

If you love the charm of a wood-burning fireplace but are also giving thought to a more eco-friendly fuel choice, we can talk with you about pellet-burning appliances, which use recycled material that would otherwise be waste (including sawdust).
